Vale Mike 'Fish' Jeanmarie, 1945-2010

Mike Jeanmaire was born in Bristol on December 20 1945, and brought up by his mother, in the villages around Mendip. When at school in Ubley, he was given the nickname "Fish" due to his fondness for fishing. The name stuck for the rest of his life. In the early 1960s, Fish started caving in the Mendips. Under the influence of Mike Wooding of the Independent Cave Diving Group, Oliver Lloyd, Mike Boon, and other legends of the time, he soon became one of the leading cavers and divers. Challenged by Oliver Lloyd, and following the example of some cavers who had not realised that they had already passed Sump 1, Fish was the first person to routinely, and safely, free dive down the Swildon's streamway, without diving tanks, all the way to Sump 6.
