It seems that every day we hear about a new herbicide resistant weed. The truly alarming part is not that resistance is occurring, but how fast it is progressing. Every month seems to confinn a new field. However, not every herbicide failure is due toresistance. Before we use the "R" word, let's look at some of the other factors that can reduce herbicide effectiveness. Dry weather is a major impediment to weed control. Drought stressed weeds do not readily absorb herbicides. That means that a largequantity of herbicide never enters the plant. Also, water movement in the plant is what transports the herbicide throughout the plant. This means that a drought stressed weed may not get a full dose of herbicide or move it to the required locations within the plant. As a result, spraying during a drought will allow more weeds to survive.
