Effect of nitrogen levels and time of application of NPK on yield and quality of invitro raised banana cv. dwarf cavendish

The present experiment has been carried out to study performance of in vitro propagated banana cv. Dwarf Cavendish to obtain best nutrient requirements and time of application of major plant nutrients. A 'Factorial' Randomised Block Design experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Research Farm, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur, Madhya Pradesh. The 5 levels of nitrogen (N_t-100, N_2-150, N_3-200, N_4-250, and N_5-300 g/plant) with 3 split application of NPK (S_o - N_o spliting & applied as basal application; S_1 - 3 spliting; and S_2 - 5 spliting at 30 days intervals) were applied. Phosphorus 200 g and potash 250 g per plant were also applied. Data on yield and quality of in vitro raised banana cv. Dwarf Cavendish were recorded on scheduled dates. Results revealed that the yield attributing characters like bunch weight, number of hands and total number of fingers per bunch were markedly affected by 300 g nitrogen and maximum values were recorded under this treatment. Similarly 5 split application of NPK produced the better results. In case of various treatment combinations, combined effect of 300 g nitrogen and 5 split application of NPK was quite superior as noticed for above mentioned characters. Results of the present investigation are quite similar with the findings of (1,4) regarding bunch weight, number of hand and total number of fingers per bunch. An increasing trend of T.S.S. were observed in vitro raised banana fruits with increasing levels of nitrogen, significantly greater values were recorded at 300 g. nitrogen level and 5 split application of NPK. Whereas, different treatment combinations did not showed any significant response (Table 2). This increasing level of T.S.S. might be due to accumulation of sugar and other soluble components from hydrolysis of protein and oxidation of ascorbic acid. Similar increasing trend of T.S.S. along with increasing levels of nitrogen have been reported by Valsamma Mathew (5), Ram and Prasad (3), and Natesh et al., (2).
