摘要

The rapid identification of residues of mammalian materials in animal feeds is important for the effective control of feeds as potential sources of transmission of BSE. In this study, a PCR method was tested for the detection of residues from cattle, goats, sheep and swine. DNA extraction was achieved using guanidium thiocyanate, and primers flanking a conserved region of mitochondrial DNA were synthesized for each species. PCR tests were specific for each species and allowed detection in feeds at levels as low as 1% of bovine DNA and 1.5% of ovine, caprine and porcine DNA. It is suggested that these PCR tests may allow the rapid detection of residues of the above species constituting a powerful tool against BSE.
