Contraceptive failure with the Mirena intrauterine system.

The Mirena intrauterine system (IUS) has been available in South Africa for over 6 years and over 50 000 of the devices have been fitted in this country. The device has certainly changed gynaecological practice in South Africa1 and gynaecologists have gained experience with the side-effects and patient tolerance.2 An audit of the incidence of ectopic pregnancy and the Mirena has recently been reviewed;3 however the incidence and audit of intrauterine pregnancies and the Mirena has not been studied.
