A study was conducted in 2000 in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, India, to investigate the effects of gamma rays (at 5, 10 and 15 Kr), ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS; at 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6%) and their combination treatments in inducing desirable changes in watermelon cv. Arka Manik. The highest frequency of chlorophyll and morphological changes was recorded in the combination treatments, followed by gamma rays and EMS. Viridis, Xantheviridis, Chlorina and Albina chlorophyll mutants were observed. Mutants differing in phenotypes were isolated. EMS was more potent than gamma rays. The mutants isolated had early ripening, higher number of fruits per plant, increased fruit size and decreased fruit size..
