Top government spokespersons commended the South African sugar industry, at the annual Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) function, for its significant contribution to education. The sugar industry is fully committed to accelerating the provision of quality education and training in the regions within which it operates and has reflected this commitment in its mission statement and its strategy and programmes and in particular through the Study Assistance Programme. Access to tertiary education is still a challenge for many young people especially those from rural sugar cane growing communities with the majority of them coming from low income, less educated families with limited information on how to secure financial support from government and other institutions.
