Planning For Process Improvement: A Mississippi State University study is focused on improving nursery productivity and worker safety through the adoption of technology and process refinement

Production of nursery and green-house crops is inherently labor intensive. Throughout the various production cycles, workers are asked to complete repetitive, physically demanding tasks that sometimes require contact with chemicals and/or equipment that results in worker-safety concerns. In an attempt to address these issues, some nurseries have looked to improve internal processes by minimizing plant movement, limiting workers' chemical exposure, and maximizing other resources. Because of the physical nature of nursery labor and associated salaries, many potential nursery and/or greenhouse employees choose other careers.
