For many in the construction industry, the single major event which raised the importance of shop drawing review was the collapse in 1981 of the skywalk at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City in which 114 people were killed. The collapse was caused by the failure of the box beam hanger rod connections supporting the atrium walkways. The original design contemplated continuous hanger rods that would be attached to the roof, pass through the fourth floor box beams and then through the second floor box beams.
