To increase their competitiveness, foundries have established demanding requirements on the flexibility and productivity of their cold resin moulding shops. Mechanised moulding plants in the classic moulding shops (Figure 1) allow for higher efficiency, the optimised use of resources, and sophisticated production methods and process cycles. In this process, the selection of a suitable binding agent system is an essential factor with respect to casting quality. The implementation of a mechanised moulding plant using the A-stage resin (resol), or alpha-set, moulding method constituted such a challenge.
