A novel organic-inorganic hybrid compound (C_9H_(14)N)_2PbCl_4 was grown via a solution-cooling process by employing the organic cation-2,4,6~trimethylaniline to control the hybrid compound and the structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to be monoclinic, P2(1)/c with a = 24.350(0) A, b = 25.167(0) A, c = 7.694(0) A, beta = 95.77(9)°, and Z=8. The compound adopted an unprecedented structure, which was built with the staircase-like 1-D chains of PbCl_4 octahedra sandwiched with the square pyramids of PbCl_5. Raman and infrared spectra were used to gain more information of the title compound. The hybrid compound showed the photoluminescence emission at 424 nm.
