Effect of Eucalyptus species and soil type on infestation levels of heartwood termites (Insecta : Isoptera) in reforested areas of Brazil

The objective of this work was to study the influence of Eucalyptus tree species and their corresponding soil type on the infestation levels of heartwood termites that are acquainted with these trees. The percentage of infestation by heartwood termites was higher in sandy soil than in loamy soils, and independent of the tree species that was planted. Eucalyptus urophylla and Eucalyptus cloeziana showed similar infestation levels in loamy soils with 7.5 and 7.2%, respectively. Eucalyptus camaldulensis had an infestation level of 3.6%, and Eucalyptus citriodora had an infestation level of 0.9%. E. urophylla was more infested than E. camaldutensis by heartwood termites in reforested areas in both soils.
