Taxonomic Revision of the Pheidole rinae Emery Complex

Five species are recognized among infraspecific taxa of Pheidole rinae Emery: P. rinae Emery, P. hongkongensis Wheeler, P. parva Mayr (senior synonym of P. parva var. decanica Forel, P. rinae var. mala Forel, P. rinae race tipuna Forel and P. sauteriWheeler), P. pieli Santschi (senior synonym of P. rinae subsp. incensa Wheeler), and P. taipoana Wheeler. Pheidole nodgii var. zoceana Santschi is raised to species level; it seems to be closely related to P. parva and P. rabo Forel but not to the P. nodgii group. P. tsailuni Wheeler is a junior synonym of P. rabo.
