(CN_3H_6)_2 centre dot (VO)_3(H_2O)_3(HPO_3)_4 centre dot 3H_2O, a new uganidnium-templated vanadium (IV) phosphite is built up from a (3,4) net of VO_5(H_2O) pseudo squares and HPO_3 pseudo pyramids, sharing vertices as V-O-P bonds. These polyhedra self assemble around the extra-framework guanidinium cations and water molecules, which appear to exert their templating effects in orthogonal directions, to result in a very-low-density framework containing intersecting 12-ring channels. Crystal data: (CN_3H_6) centre dot (VO)_3(H_2O)_3(HPO_3)_4 centre dot 3H_2O, M_r = 749.00, orthorhombic, Pna2_1 (No. 33), a = 19.0766 (13) A, b=9.1657(6) A, c = 14.1806(9) A, V = 2479.5(3) A~3, Z = 4, R = 0.050, R_w = 0.094.
