The influence of location on local attitudes toward community conservation on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Interaction of communities and land managers can have unpredictable effects, and it is often unclear whether local attitudes toward conservation are representative of broad, local sentiments or result from interactions with land managers. By comparing three communities with similar social, cultural, and economic backgrounds yet different exposure to land managers, this article examines the impact of the Mount Kilimanjaro Community Conservation Service (CCS) on attitudes of local residents. A survey, administered to 92 randomly selected households in three villages on Mount Kilimanjaro, showed that residents with the most exposure to CCS had higher expectations of receiving benefits from the park, were more likely to think officials directly benefit, and were less willing to speak openly about their interaction with the land. While all villages rated the importance of conservation highly, the differences between attitudes show some negative results from community/park interactions, while positive results from local projects were not widely recognized.
