The world's largest producer of ostrich products, The Klein Karoo Group, has diversified by acquiring Sun Cuisine, a plant that prepares convenience foods using the renowned sous-vide method of cooking. Tricia Fitchet reports. THE outbreak of avian flu in the Eastern Cape last year was a huge blow to ostrich producers. Although involving none of The Klein Karoo Group's birds, the South African government applied a voluntary 14-month ban on the export of all raw ostrich meat. But what seemed like a death knell became an opportunity for growth as the company looked for other business avenues.
