Fabulous growth has seen JSE-listed Famous Brands inject R34-million capex to upgrade its manufacturing facilities, including R12 million on a fully-automated roll bakery at its Midrand HQ. Susan Unsworth reports. FAMOUS Brands was founded in the 1950s by George alamandres who introduced to South Africa both the steakhouse and the concept of franchising. In the mid-1980s, other family members joined the business and it has evolved and grown beyond recognition: from a few steakhouses, takeaway outlets and a sauce and spice operation, into the country's leading and very visible quick-service restaurant organisation.
