Just after the beverage industry converged on Munich for the massive Drinktec expo in September, it then headed off to Milan in late November for the biennial SIMEI trade fair, Italy's specialised wine/beverage packaging exhibition. FOOD REVIEW business manager, Cindy Clapton, was there, with camera, and captured some of the fairly substantial South African contingent. THE 21st SIMEI (International Winemaking and Bottling Machinery Salon) was a sellout, with 767 exhibitors, and another 133 at the adjacent Enovitis expo that covered viticulture. Italy, now the leading wine-producing country in the world, is home to much cutting-edge technology, in addition to its historic tradition and know-how, and it's no surprise that nearly 50 000 visitors ventured to SIMEI in a snowy Milan. Illustrating the rapid growth of the beverage sector in the developing world, SIMEI's organiser's report significantly greater visitor interest from SE Asia, countries in the former Soviet Union, and a large delegation fromAfrica.
