With the new lambing season underway, shock evidence has emerged that the killer disease coccidiosis is rife on UK sheep farms. The evidence comes from results of an extensive survey carried out by Janssen Animal Health in conjunction with the National Sheep Association. These indicate that coccidiosis is present on a staggering 93% of farms. Says Janssen Animal Health's Nick Burford: "This will be of great concern to the UK's 58,000 sheep farmers. Coccidiosis can increase lamb mortality by up to 10per cent, reduce growth rate in survivors by up to 38 per cent and adversely affect feed conversion efficiency. These factors make it more costly to finish lambs for market."
