Anew initiative supplying South Downs branded lamb to high street butchers within the region is helping to reap rewards for sheep producers within the proposed South Downs National Park. Managed by South Downs Marketing Limited (SDML), last year the company paid its farmer shareholders a flat rate of £2.60/kg, amounting to a premium of £6.75 per lamb over the average weekly market price. Turnover amounted to 5,500 lambs to 18 retail outlets. Budgets have been rescheduled for this year to source 10,000 lambs to supply 30 butchers, expanding to between 15,000 and 18,000 lambs in 2007.
