The non-EID slaughter tag was seen as a hard-won concession for sheep farmers in England and Wales in 2010, giving them the option (unlike in Scotland and Northern Ireland) to use a single visual slaughter tag or a single EID slaughter tag in lambs going straight to an abattoir or via a collection centre or red market. But use of the EID slaughter tag has been falling, with only 31% of single batch tags sold last year being electronic, and the incorrect use of non-EID tags creates problems reportingmovements of mixed batches of lambs from different farms (batch-within-batch).
