Over 50% of the UK is down to grass. But is it productive? Often it is the regions with the highest proportion of livestock that some of the oldest, least productive grassland is found. A new ley with 90 per cent ryegrass can lose over 50 per cent of its original ryegrass content within four years. Worse still, deterioration often accelerates in drought and flood conditions.
