Controlling Perennial Weeds: Choose a method of killing weeds that has a long-lasting effect

There are many ways to control broadleaved weeds in grassland, but they offer varying levels of success. The first approach is to stop weeds establishing in the first place. A well-managed, dense sward growing on non-compacted soil reduces the chanceof weeds gaining a foothold. On the other hand, pasture that has been badly poached, leaves bare patches of soil where weed seeds can easily germinate. Last year's record rainfall means few fields have come through the winter unscathed. Consequently, there is likely to be a substantial increase in dock and thistle infestations this spring.
