Perennial Chicory: Providing added productivity to summer grazing sward

In an on-going quest to maximise production per hectare from sus-tainably farmed lowland pastures, Newton Rigg college farm manager David Woodcock has reseeded swards used for fattening March-born lambs with the best quality grass and clover mixtureavailable. Half of the 3 hectares reseeded included an added ingredient - a new variety of perennial chicory - alongside high sugar perennial ryegrasses and white clover, allowing him to carry out a six-week study to monitor growth rates in two groups of Texel-cross lambs and assess the merits of this alternative forage source.
