Lamb Exports: Jean-Pierre Gamier looks at some good reasons to be upbeat

The 2001 foot and mouth (FMD) trauma destroyed UK exports overnight, but we are successfully rebuilding those lost markets. Doggedness, plenty hard work and investment by exporters together with the levy bodies such as EBLEX and HCC is clawing back the markets that were lost to chilled third country lamb imports. And our exports are now nearing their pre-FMD level of around 100,000 tonnes (see table 1). The good news is that, Europe-wide, the UK is once again recognised as the major specialist for the production of quality sheep meat - producing a high quality product, at a reasonable cost which consumers in Europe and beyond want to eat.
