Impact of booster biocides on subtropical marine species

In this study the acute toxicities of copper, tributyltin (TBT) and five commonly used booster biocides on the growth or survival of subtropical marine species native to Hong Kong were investigated. The booster biocides employed in this study were: Irgarol, diuron, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT), copper pyrithione (CuPT) and chlorothalonil. Marine species in the study included eight native species of subtropical Hong Kong, two common cosmopolitan marine diatoms, a commercially available bioluminescent dinoflagellate, and the marine medaka fish, Oryzias melastigma. Irgarol was found to be more toxic than TBT on the growth of autotrophic species. Of the majority of the test species, the toxicity of CuPT was found to be comparable to that of TBT; however, higher toxicity was observed on medaka fish larvae with CuPT than TBT.
