US EPA identifies flame retardants for risk assessment

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to begin risk assessments on twenty-three commonly used chemicals of which twenty substances are used as flame retardants. In March 2012, EPA identified a work plan of 83 chemicals for further assessment under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). EPA will conduct a full risk assessment for four of the 20 flame retardants that have sufficient data, three of which are on the TSCA work plan and one that was the subject of an Action Plan developed under TSCA. The chemicals are: 1. 2-ethylhexyl ester 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate 2. 1,2-ethylhexyl 3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-benzenedicarboxylate or bis(2-ethylhexyl) 3,4,5,6-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH) 3. tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) 4. hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)
