The patent describes a cosmetic composition for nails that are cracked, thin. brittle and soft or split. The cosmetic composition is in the form of a nail polish. polish base coat, care oil, an aqueous solution, an emulsion or a gel, and contains at least one aldehyde as a nail-hardening agent. Film-forming cosmetic compositions such as polishes are preferred since they remain on the nail. Aldehydes, including formaldehyde, glyoxal and glutaraldehyde, are often used in nail-hardening compositions, but formaldehyde is carcinogenic, and glyoxal and glutaraldehyde are harmful by inhalation and may cause skin sensitisation. The stated objectives of this patent are to provide a nail-hardening composition that overcomes the problems of the named aldehydes, does not yellow in the presence of UV light and does not have an unpleasant odour.
