The discovery of a small tin canister in Southwark,London'11 containing a cream was of great interest to me as it brought together my profession of cosmetic science with my interest in archaeology. This archaeological interest has recently taken on a practical aspect as I have been assisting in the excavations at the Roman site of Vindolanda in Northumberland,a site that has produced some 2000 wooden tables recording the everyday life of a Roman frontier fort. The soil character and chemistry of the site is responsible for the wonderful preservation conditions that can be found there.
