Skin damage caused by the sun results from the ability of UV radiation to penetrate the skin according to its wavelength. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin causing long-lasting damage, such as blemishes, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. UVB rays, on the other hand, are mainly responsible for immediate damage, such as erythema and skin burns. However, it is well known that, when applied to the skin in large areas of the body for prolonged periods, sunscreens are absorbed and may cause adverse effects. Studies have shown how, once absorbed into the skin, substances such as benzophenone-3, 3-benzylidene camphor, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and octyl-methoxycinnamate can affect hormone levels, and have estrogenic activity, which increases cancer risk. Many clinical studies have confirmed the presence of UV filters in human breast milk during the early breastfeeding stages (6-14 days after birth) following the application of sunscreens.
