EC RAISES CONCERNS OVER NANO-SILICA

The European Commission has asked the Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety (SCCS) for a full report on the safety of nano-silica in cosmetics. Currently these compounds are not regulated in the Cosmetic Regulation (1223/2009) but are reported in the Cosing database. The Commission said it has received 172 notifications for cosmetic products containing nano-silica, in the form of silica, hydrated silica, silylate and silica dimethyl silylate. According to the Commission, the ingredients have been used in nano form in both leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic products, including products for the hair, skin, lips, face and nails, and in different concentrations and specifications.
