Fatal Explosion at Alabama Coal Mine

On Sept. 23, two explosions resulted in fires and a cave-in at the No. 5 coal mine owned Jim Walter Resources Ins.'s, Brookwood, AL. There are four confirmed fatalities and another nine workers are missing and presumed dead.The company introduced water into the affected section and mine operations will not resume until the fires are extinguished. It is not known how long it will take to extinguish those fires. JAR's other two mines were closed on Sept. 25 in respect for those lost in the accident.
