Based on the adsorptive behavior of clarithromycin onto the mercury electrode surface, simple and reliable linear-sweep (LS-AdCS) and square-wave adsorptive cathodic stripping (SW-AdCS) voltammetry procedures for quantification of bulk clarithromycin have been developed. The described electroanalytical procedures were successfully applied to determination of clarithromycin in a pharmaceutical formulation Klacid~R tablets and in human urine. The procedure was free from sample derivatization or extraction of the drug prior to analysis, what makes the proposed approach especially advantageous compared to most of the reported chromatographic, spectrophotometric, and spectroflourimetric methods. The achieved limits of detection of bulk clarithromycin were 3 x 10~(-8) mol L~(-1) (22.41 ng mL~(-1)) and 1.5 x 10~(-8) mol L~(-1) (11.2 ng mL~(-1)) for LS-AdCS and SW-AdCS, respectively. LOD values for clarithromycin in human urine analysis were 2 x 10~(-7) mol L~(-1) (149.4 ng mL~(-1)) and 3 x 10~(-8) mol L~(-1) (22.41 ng raL~(-1)), respectively for LS-AdCS and SW-AdCS.
