Lake Carrier's Association Releases Shipping Figures For 2011

According to an article on wdio.com, around 93.8 million tons of dry-bulk cargo was shipped by the U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters ("lakers") in 2011.This figure marks an increase of 5.75 percent against the numbers for 2010. According to the report, the 2011 "float" was just about on par with the fleet's five-year average. Compared with last year, iron ore cargos for the steel industry increased remarkably by 12.4 percent. The cargoes have even exceeded their 5-year average by a stellar 12.7 percent. The numbers for coal loadings however are not as rosy.
