Asbestos on Hamersley Range Halts CITIC Pacific Project

A crisis meeting has stopped work at CITIC Pacific's 5.2 billion dollars Sino iron ore project near Karratha on the Hamersley Range South of Port Hedland in western Australia after potentially hazardous asbestos was found on the site, according to union officials. On Sept. 18, Steve McCartney, Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union State secretary, demanded CITIC stop work at the site until fears over worker asbestos exposure were addressed.
