Empire Mine Needs New Options to Extend Life of Mine

According to The Mining Journal, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc has predicted that its 79 percent-owned Empire mine on Michigan's Marquette range, will not operate beyond 2009 unless an alternative to extend the mine's life is found. According to Dale Hemmila, district manager of public affairs for Cliffs, the Empire mine will most likely not have the capacity to produce iron ore pellets past 2009. Shutting the mine would likely lead to the loss of more than 600 jobs.
