Asarco to Suspend East Helena Smelter Operations April 4

Asarco Inc., New York, NY plans to indefinitely suspend operations at its East Helena, MT lead smelter on or about April 4. Asarco has been unable to obtain appropriate feed materials that permit continued economic operation of the smelter.The company informed employees and union officials of the suspension decision in February at the plant and distributed 60-day WARN notices to all smelter employees. The plant was put on care and maintenance during the suspension.
