Iron Recovery Improvement at Wabush Mines' Scully Concentrator

Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of four steel companies, Stelco, Dofasco, Inland Steel and Acme and the Cliffs Mining Co., a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc, which manages the mine. The Wabush project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in western Labrador. Mining and concentrating facilities are in western Labrador, while the pelletizing and dock facilities are at Pointe Noire, Que., 200 miles south on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The mining operation is based on a five and one-half square mile specular hematite deposit at the southern end of the Labrador trough. The ore is a friable specular hematite rock, with some magnetite, limonite and goethite present. Manganese is found in the ore primarily as pyrolusite, which occurs as the free mineral and as intergrowths with the hematite. Silica occurs as free particles and also as a matrix for the fine grained hematite.
