The research project designated by the abbreviation "KUPOLOPT" has as its aim the economical and ecological optimisation of cupolas in foundries. The melting of cast iron in cupolas is a process of considerable importance. To enable this process to consolidate its position and compete with other melting processes, the present project was rated worthy of support and included among a number of projects within the programme "Integrated environmental protection in the foundry industry", funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, or BMBF, under the title "Ecological and economical optimisation of the cupola melting process through the use of oxy-natural gas burners and possible simultaneous injection of solids".
