The Southern Appalachian Botanical Society: Seventy-Five Years and Growing

As the Southern Appalachian Botanical Club (SABC) celebrated 50 years of existence in 1986, the membership felt great pride and excitement about the organization's long history and continuous publication of its journal, Castanea. The only downside, assuggested by Baranski (1986), was that the Club seemed to have only one major reason for existence, publication of the journal. Van Horn (1986) stated that several changes were worthy of announcing that year. First was the opportunity to develop an endowment of $200,000 to ensure the publication of Castanea. Second was the announcement of new awards, including the North Carolina Botanical Garden Award for best contributed paper at the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) meeting and the establishment of the Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew Service Award. Third was a challenge to the membership to look at ways the Southern Appalachian Botanical Club (the organization's name through 1992 when the name was changed to Society) could assist the newly formed Outreach Committee in its duties.
