A United Nations Global Health Panel for Global Health Governance: A commentary on Mackey

The proposal of a United Nations (UN) Panel for Global Health Governance addresses a critical need for more coherence between interventions in global health to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to respond to health threats in an effective and timely manner. The opportunity costs of overlapping and duplicated actions and of the inefficient utilization of scarce resources are high in financial terms, but also in terms of health outcomes. There is clearly a need for an organization which can bring together the hundreds of organizations, big and small, which are active in funding and delivering global health interventions. Would a UN Panel be the appropriate response? Can the World Health Organization (WHO) lead a global health agenda as proposed by Mackey & Liang?
