United Nations Environment Programme joins ranks of CGIAR sponsors

In a move indicating a shift toward greater emphasis on the environment and sustainability in rural development, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has become the fourth co-sponsor of an international network of agricultural research centres. The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is the world's largest international agricultural research consortium. Its 16 individual research centres spread around the world investigate ways to improve crop and livestock production by breeding higher-yielding plants and animals, and by finding new ways of farming in difficult climates and soils.
