An elegantly simple waiting pump makes life easier-and richer-for small fanners. A low-profile technological miracle is quietly taking place. In the past few years, without fanfare or fireworks, more than a million of the poorest farmers in Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia and several other countries have doubled their incomes and stepped beyond bare subsistence-thanks to a simple, inexpensive water pump. They're able to harvest a second crop during the dry season, plant new varieties of vegetables, and in some semi-arid spots crops are being grown where nothing grew before.
