Farmers fired the first salvo against GATT by ransacking the Car gill Seeds office... The current debate between free trade buffs and the left-supported protectionists is sterile and outdated. Ever since it began in India, no conscious effort has beenmade to educate the people about the implications of the ongoing GATT talks. It does not serve any useful purpose to make wild claims in support of free trade. What is important is how it will affect us as a nation.We should not tread the path of free trade blindly. Whatever we do to our growing industry under the direction of the multinationals is not going to affect the poor, but even a slight tampering with our famine-avoidance agricultural system will increaseour dependence on the Western world. If we allow this to happen, food will be used as a weapon against India....
