Concurrent Renal Adenocarcinoma and Polycythemia in a Dog

Renal adenocarcino ma is rarely reported in dogs and usually occurs in middle-aged and older animals. Polycythemia may be associated with neoplastic renal disease in response to increased levels of erythropoietin. A young dog was found to have concurrent renal adenocarcinoma and polycythemia. A female Rhodesian Ridgeback, 19 months old, had bleeding gums, injected sclera, and depression. Clinical examination revealed brick red oral mucous membranes, increased temperature, periodic systolic murmur, engorged retinal vessels, a swollen right tarsus, and a large palpable mass in the right craniodorsal abdomen.
