Using Ivermectin to Treat Parasitic Dermatoses in Small Animals

Invermectin is an antiparasitic drug approved only for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs. It has not been approved for any use in cats. Despite this, many veterinarians routinely use this drug to treat parasitic skin diseases in dogs and cats. Invermectin, active against nematodes and athropods, probably has several mechanisms of action. The effect the drug has on neurotransmission mediated by gam-ma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may be most important. The drug is not effective against cestodesand trematodes, as these parasites do not use GABA as a neurotransmitter.
