A Method for Detecting Glycosuria in Urine Soaked Cat Litter

Appropriate management of feline diabetes mellitus depends on monitoring of blood glucose concentration. Although measurement of glucose in blood is the most direct method of determination, difficulties in blood collection, hyperglycemia associated with stress, and poor owner compliance may render this method impractical. Although urinary glucose determination is an indirect, and not completely accurate, method of determination of blood glucose, it is reflective of general trends. Collection of urine from cats, however, has been problematic. A method for retrieving urine from soiled cat litter has been developed.
