Improved Fitness of Arabidopsis thaliana Nitrilase 2

The occurrence of nitrile compounds such as cyanoglycosides or cyanolipids in nature is fairly widespread. Nature also provides the respective enzymes for nitrile metabolism in plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria (e.g., nitrilases EC 3.5.5.1). These enzymes hydrolyze nitriles to the corresponding carboxylic acids and ammonia by addition of two molecules of water (Scheme 1).
