Since Wilkinson's discovery that the use of phosphine ligands on rhodium catalysts can greatly affect the product selectivity in hydroformylation reactions, the majority of research in this area has been focused on creating novel phosphine ligands to optimize the reaction. Early rationalizations judged the behavior of these rhodium phosphine complexes retrospectively, making assumptions about their behavior based on their performance as a catalyst.
