Electric cars could have add-on battery packs

The problem with electric cars is the weight, bulk and cost of enough batteries to get enough range for a wide range of use. You either have to always carry around far more batteries than you usually need, or like Chevrolet's Volta or the plug-in hybrid Prius, carry the weight of a petrol/diesel/LPG motor that on most common trips won't need to start.
